Moffatt’s grandmother had died, and Moffatt bought full-price tickets after the chatbot said a reduced bereavement rate could be requested after travel. Air Canada later said the rate did not apply to completed travel, a restriction explained elsewhere on its website.\n\nThe tribunal member rejected Air Canada’s argument that the chatbot was responsible for its own actions. He wrote that the chatbot was part of the airline’s website, and that customers had no reason to know one section was accurate while another was not. He found Air Canada had not taken reasonable care to ensure the chatbot’s accuracy.\n\nAs an Escape Meridian interpretation, the case may matter because the tribunal treated chatbot advice as information for which the company operating the website could be responsible, rather than as a separate entity’s advice. The article says cases involving bad chatbot advice were scarce, and describes Moffatt’s case as apparently the first in a survey of Canadian legal decisions. That account does not establish how other courts or tribunals will handle similar disputes. How will other decision-makers assess responsibility when chatbot advice conflicts with information elsewhere on a company’s website","path":"/readings/radio-canada-air-canada-held-liable-for-chatbot-s-bad-advice-on-bb9cfa36","sourceUrl":"https://ici.radio-canada.ca/rci/en/news/2049921/air-canada-found-liable-for-chatbots-bad-advice-on-plane-tickets","publisher":"Radio-Canada","originalPublished":"2024-02-16","dateLabel":"Feb 16, 2024","relationship":"publisher","relationshipLabel":"Publisher","topicIds":["work-and-agency"],"sourceParticipation":[],"roles":[],"participationCoverage":{"total":0,"returned":0,"complete":true,"fullAssertions":"source-metadata-endpoint"}}],"scanned":137,"truncated":false,"scanLimit":500,"checkedAt":"2026-11-05T17:18:08.695Z"},"currentReadingsUrl":"/entities/radio-canada.json"}
